A critical flaw in the design of an EU law on energy infrastructure has helped the fossil fuel industry pocket over €1 billion in EU taxpayer funds for gas projects, Friends of the Earth Europe and Food & Water Action Europe analysis shows. [1]

The analysis comes as a majority of MEPs are set to vote on Friday (July 10) to call to revise the controversial 'trans-European energy infrastructure' (TEN-E) regulation.

Nearly 10 years after a clean-up was urged for areas polluted by Shell and other oil companies in the Niger Delta, work has begun on only 11% of planned sites while vast areas remain heavily contaminated, according to a new investigation by Friends of the Earth Europe, Amnesty International, ERA and Milieudefensie.

Friends of the Earth Europe works to prevent the extractive industries from destroying people's lives, the environment and the climate. We believe that resources should be utilised fairly and sustainably. Enforceable rules and practices are required to ensure that natural resources are a blessing, not a curse.

We are working to create the much-needed, fair and urgent transition to a fossil fuel free Europe by 2030 - dismantling the fossil fuel system and creating the just, clean energy future that people want and need.
